Seed Starting Craft

Give the Gift of Spring Craft

Help you friends get a head start on the garden with this upcycled, easy-to-make, seed start gift. Plant your favorite herbs and when they emerge, share them with friends and neighbors!

  • Empty tin can
  • Hammer and screwdriver
  • Potting soil
  • Pebbles
  • Herb seeds
  • Glue stick or tape
  • Printed gift tag
  • (template below)

STEP 1 Wash tin can thoroughly, making sure to remove any and all residue.

STEP 2 Turn can upside down and with the hammer and screwdriver carefully punch a few holes in the bottom for drainage.

STEP 3 With the can right side up, place a thin layer of rocks or pebbles along the bottom. Then add potting soil until the can is a little over ¾ of the way full.

STEP 4 Gently place 2-3 seeds just under the surface of the soil. Then, cover them with another thin layer of potting soil.

STEP 5 Water the seeds so that the soil is damp but not soaked, making sure to keep the soil moist. Place in a sunny, warm location so the herbs can grow strong and tall.

STEP 6 Put the finishing touches on your gift by printing out an herb gift label, using the template below, to let your friend or neighbor know what you’ve grown for them. Wrap label around each tin can, cutting off any excess length, and attach the ends with glue or tape. Your gift is ready to go!
